Go for your big dream - I know you are up for it!
If you are an athlete and you want to be a high school basketball star, you set your sights on that. If you want to go to the Olympics, get a basketball scholarship or eventually go pro, your workout regimen in high school is totally different.
Where are you at in your business? Are you doing the right kind and right amount of actions today that will bring you to your ultimate goal?
Here are a few tips:
Commit to the results, not the action. A perfect example is in selling. If your goal is 5 sales in a week, then committing to make 25 sales calls is not ultimately getting you 5 sales. Your strategy plan may be to make 5 sales calls a day, but you need to consistently monitor the effectiveness of your strategy and correct your plan for the week if you are drifting off target. This is key – don’t confuse your strategy plan with your desired end result.
Dream the right dream for you. If you want to be an Olympian, you dream the Olympic dream – it fuels your fire for the necessary focus, commitment and persistence required for your success. Don’t dream tiny because getting there is easy. Save ‘tiny’ for the small sweet steps you need to take daily to achieve a step goal. (A step goal is one of many goals that, combined, link together to get you from where you are to where you want to be.)
Tell the truth – especially to yourself. Let me give you an example. Some people have pretend businesses. You know what I mean – they spend lots of dollars and turn little if any profit – sometimes for years. Others have no idea what their sales goals are, what their profit projections are or whether they are on track. Let’s agree from this point on to always tell the truth. It may be uncomfortable to take an honest look, but you are always better off once you do. You have a profitable, thriving business or you don’t . You will grow (notice I did not water this down by saying “you want to grow”) you will grow your business profit by 15% this quarter or you won’t. You will survive, you will thrive, or you won’t. You have been successful in some ways, but not in all ways, and it is time to make some changes, or you will keep pretending and not paying attention.
Start now by taking an honest look at where you are. Are you content being a high school sports star, or are you in training for the Olympics? Is your business success story about now, or is it about something that happened 4 – 5 years ago? Are you in a business or in a hobby? If you are having trouble being clear about any this, reach out to me. As a coach to solo entrepreneurs and small businesses, I help my clients gain the clarity needed, set the right goals, and structure actions designed for results.
The same principles are true for those of you not in business but want to make changes in your life. If you want to have a vacation with friends, commit to the results, don’t just talk about it. If you want to have that nice house ‘someday’, put a date to when ‘someday’ will be, and start putting a plan in place. Again, tell the truth – if you want to be in a loving relationship with someone who has similar interests, are you taking the necessary steps to bring that about? Are you going to bars or searching on line in hopes that someone will ‘magically’ appear, doggedly sticking to this method after trying this for a while (how many years has it been?) with little to poor results? As a personal coach, I work with people to get clear, beautiful visions of what they want their life to be, and take the right steps (no genie in a bottle) to get there.
It takes courage and integrity to look honestly at where you are now, and even more courage to dream the right dream and take the right steps. But that’s ok, because I know you are up for it!
